Presenteeism

We all understand absenteeism, but what exactly is presenteeism?

Presenteeism is when an employee shows up to work but isn’t fully productive due to illness, injury, or a health condition. They’re physically there, but their output and performance are reduced and it’s costing Australia approximately AUD $35 billion each year.

It’s often considered the less visible cousin of absenteeism yet the Australian absenteeism rate of 7.3% is minimal compared to the presenteeism rate of 44.4% and costs organisations three times more, in terms of lost productivity and efficiency and largely remains untracked.

In the context of heart health, for example, a worker managing undiagnosed high blood pressure or coronary artery disease might show fatigue and underproductive throughout their shift without anyone realising the cause is an underlying chronic disease.

Absenteeism is costing the Australian economy $44 billion every single year.

That’s 92 million working days lost. $340 per absent employee, per day. The numbers are still increasing as absenteeism has risen 7% since 2010. But here’s the thing, so much of this is preventable.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in Australia and one of the biggest drivers of workplace absenteeism. Yet 80% of coronary artery disease is preventable through simple lifestyle changes.

So what if we flipped the script? Instead of reacting to illness after the fact, what if organisations invested in prevention from the start?

That’s exactly what we do at HeartCore Group. We work with organisations in delivering in-person heart health seminars at your workplace to educate your teams on the risk factors driving cardiovascular disease before they become costly absences, reduced productivity, or worse.

The investment is small. The return? Fewer sick days, a healthier, more productive workforce, and a stronger bottom line.
